It's shocking and shameful. In 72 hours, we saw just how eager Senate Republicans are to appease Donald Trump by ramming through his far-right agenda.
With the confirmation of Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education, we saw Trump's Vice President forced to cast an unprecedented tie-breaking vote. Never once has a Cabinet position been confirmed without the backing of a majority of our elected Senators.
The next day, when my friend Elizabeth Warren took to the Senate floor to speak out against Trump's nominee for Attorney General, Republicans censored her -- telling her to sit down and be silent.Read more
Here in Massachusetts, we have a four letter word for "alternative facts"; we simply call them lies. But this is what we're up against -- people who will attempt to use their own reality to make a case to drastically change our country unless we stand up and push back.
Will Rogers famously said, "even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there." Well, I don't know about you, but I'm not just sitting here waiting for Donald Trump to run our values over.Read more
This Monday is President's Day, a holiday created to celebrate George Washington's birthday. While many enjoy President's Day as a much needed three-day weekend, it is also a time to honor and reflect on some of the profound thinkers and doers who have made our nation great.Read more
I wanted to take a moment out of this busy time of year to wish you a Happy Holiday! The Holidays are a good time to reflect on the past year and take stock of the important people in your life, like you. I am so grateful for your friendship and support.
While this time of year is a season of joy and good tidings, I would be remiss if I did not also acknowledge the hardships facing so many Americans. Several families are struggling to put food on the table. Parents are dealing with children battling addiction. And, so many of us are worrying about loved ones that are half-a-world away protecting our freedoms., I would be remiss if I did not also acknowledge the hardships facing so many Americans. For the past month, many mailboxes have been filled with senior pictures and commencement invitations. Bakeries and grocery stores have been crowded with proud family and friends picking up cakes. In front lawns, signs and banners read: "Job well done," "Class of 2015," and "Congratulations!"
As I pass by the graduation parties and signs, I consider myself fortunate. So much of what I have been able to achieved in my life is due to my parents and the quality of the education I received. And like so many others, while attending college, I was able to help pay tuition by working part time jobs.Read more
My grandmother was a Gold Star mother and I always knew how honorable that title was to her. My father was a veterans benefits agent and he taught me the importance of advocating for our military families, especially those who had a loved one make the ultimate sacrifice.
It is my belief that one of our Nation's greatest duties, and the truest way to honor our fallen heroes, is to ensure their surviving family are taken care of. Tragically, many of our fallen heroes are young, which often means their sole survivors are their parents. That is why I authored and introduced the Gold Star Families Equality Act last Memorial Day.Read more
Traditions are important, and the month of November is full of them. On the Tuesday following the first Monday of the month our nation comes together to celebrate democracy by exercising our right to vote in free and fair elections. On the eleventh day of the month we join together in showing appreciation to the men and women who have served our country in the armed forces. On the fourth Thursday of November we take an opportunity to reflect on all that we have to be grateful for as we celebrate Thanksgiving.Read more
I am humbled and honored that you have re-elected me to represent you for the next two years.
Thank you for the countless hours you spent on the phones and knocking on doors -- even in the snow -- encouraging people to vote, your grassroots donations, and everything else you've done for the campaign. This is a victory that we all share.
It's because of you that we can celebrate this win -- a win for the middle-class families, students, seniors, and veterans in Southeastern Massachusetts.
Again, thank you for everything you've done. This would not have been possible without your help.Read more
We, as a Nation, collectively paused this past Monday - as we do each year on Memorial Day - to reflect on the many sacrifices made by the service men and women, and their families, who have defended our country.
I believe one of our Nation's greatest duties and the truest way to honor our fallen heroes is to ensure their surviving family are taken care of. That is why I authored and introduced the Gold Star Families Equality Act last week. This legislation will allow Gold Star parents to access retail, exchange, and commissary benefits currently only afforded to surviving spouses.Read more
