Protecting our Environment

While serving in the Massachusetts legislature, Bill wrote and passed safe water legislation that continues to protect the Commonwealth’s fragile lakes, streams and wetlands from chemical pollution to this day.  He is committed to protecting the diverse ecosystems of Southeast Massachusetts with the same passion.

While in Congress, Bill has strongly opposed repeated attacks on environmental protections that have a direct impact on water and food quality and would have severe health and economic implications.  Our region relies heavily on the tourism industry and, to ensure its vitality, our beaches need to be pristine, our water needs to be clean, and our fish and shellfish need a toxin-free ecosystem.  Further, the surrounding waters of Cape Cod Bay, Buzzards Bay, and Nantucket Sound, and the nearby Gulf of Maine are a direct resource of knowledge about our ocean’s ecosystems, the escalating consequences of climate change, and the impacts of human activity on marine life.  For this reason, he has been a staunch advocate for tax credits and programs that promote the thriving research and development sector in Massachusetts.

He is also a strong supporter of renewable energy projects, which will create jobs and lower our energy costs while protecting our environment and reducing our dependence on foreign oil. Bill knows that investments in green technologies and renewable energies are a direct investment in our regional economy.

Bill is a member of the House Oceans Caucus, the House Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Caucus, and the Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition.
